High potential and gifted education

Every child learns in their own way, and some students grasp ideas quickly or show exceptional strengths in areas such as creativity, problem-solving, leadership or sport.

At Mudgee Public School, we recognise these strengths early and are committed to nurturing them. Through engaging lessons, enriched learning opportunities and purposeful challenges, we support advanced learners to grow, thrive and reach their full potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

At Mudgee Public School, our HPGE program is designed to support students with advanced learning needs, helping them reach their full potential. We achieve this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

At Mudgee Public School, our students engage with HPGE education not only in the classroom but across the school and throughout NSW. We offer a wide range of programs and activities designed to extend learning, nurture talent, and inspire creativity. Students can explore their skills through CAPA rotations, Tournament of Minds, and Eisteddfod performances, or develop their artistic side at Creative Arts Camps, the CLC Art Show, and the CLC Film Festival. Leadership, collaboration, and innovation are encouraged through Game Changer programs, Mud Media, podcasting, Rodger Watton workshops, and multicultural public speaking. Students can also pursue their passions in dance, choirs, and a variety of sporting activities, ensuring there’s something to engage and challenge every learner.

In our classroom

At Mudgee Public School, our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program provides students with opportunities to extend their learning and challenge themselves within the classroom. Students engage in enrichment groups in English and Maths, open-ended tasks, and extension activities designed to stretch their thinking and foster creativity.

Teachers use differentiation, visible learning strategies, and project-based learning to cater to individual strengths, while strategy-based learning develops problem-solving skills across a range of levels. Students also have access to online resources, academic competitions, public speaking, debating, and other extra-curricular activities, all within a flexible learning environment that encourages independence, collaboration, and curiosity.

Through these classroom experiences, Mudgee Public School ensures every student is challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.

Across our school

At Mudgee Public School, HPGE extends beyond the classroom to provide students with opportunities to explore their talents across the entire school. Students participate in enrichment groups, project-based learning, strategy-based learning, and extra-curricular activities, supported by visible learning, differentiation, and flexible learning environments.

We also offer a wide range of school-wide programs to develop leadership, creativity, and critical thinking, including public speaking, debating, personal interest projects, SDT tasks, Zones of Learning, and student voice initiatives. Sporting excellence is encouraged through PSSA, knockout competitions, gala days, and high-level opportunities in athletics, netball, and other sports, helping identify potential in all students, including those who may excel outside the classroom.

Across NSW
Mudgee Public School provides pathways for students to extend their learning and talents beyond the local school through state-wide competitions, academic challenges, Tournament of Minds (TOM), Game Changer, debating teams, public speaking events, and high-level sporting/ athletic opportunities. These experiences allow students to compete, collaborate, and showcase their skills on a broader stage, connecting with peers across NSW and fostering growth, confidence, and excellence.
